The professorship programs
Niels Bohr Professors 2011
The Niels Bohr Professorship Program seeks to attract strong, international, senior-level researchers who are able to significantly advance Danish research through the internationalization of a specific area of research in Denmark with lasting, long-term effects. A total of 200 MDKK is reserved for this call and the DNRF envisions that 6 to 8 professorships will be granted.
The board of the DNRF has in its current strategydecided to announce this new Niels Bohr Professorship program in order to continue strengthening the internationalization of Danish research. The program is inspired by the previous Niels Bohr Visiting Professorship program and the DNRF Professorships, announced in 2005 and 2006. The 2011 program is slightly revised, among others allowing larger flexibility in terms of how a Niels Bohr Professorship can be organized.
Further information about the program and information for applicants can be found here. The deadline for submission of proposals was December 2 2011.

The Niels Bohr Visiting Professorships
Supplementing the Centers of Excellence program, the Niels Bohr Visiting Professorships were initiated in 2005 with the purpose of promoting the internationalization and the competitiveness of Danish research by attracting international top researchers to existing research environments in Denmark.
The initiative was established for the period of 2006-2011. Most of the six Niels Bohr Visitingn Professors stay in Denmark approx. six months each year.
Total support amounts to 100 MDKK distributed between six grants on the order of 10.8-21 M DKK each. The initiative has been established for the period 2006-2011.
See the list of the Niels Bohr Visiting Professorships here.
The DNRF Professorships
As an extension of the six Niels Bohr Visiting Professorships, the DNRF established this five-year professorship in 2006 to further strengthen the internationalization of Danish research.
The purpose was to enhance the competitiveness of Danish research by attracting elite international scientists (foreigners or Danes abroad) to permanent employment at a Danish university for the period 2007-2012.
The professors were expected to:
- Develop and promote research within a prioritized area at a university
- Stimulate the university’s international research cooperation at a high level
- Contribute to strengthening research education programs
Furthermore, positions for one or two younger scientists are attached to each professorship.
The foundation finances the first five years of a professor’s employment, after which the host institution assumes the financial obligations. The support amounts to app. 63.4 mil. DKK in total, distributed among three grants.
